The Faculty of Informatics, Burapha University, has continuously collaborated on research with the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI), South Korea, from 2023 to 2026. This partnership drives research initiatives to combat global pandemics by integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Large Language Models (LLMs) for pandemic forecasting, which has resulted in international research publications. Building on this success, both institutions have planned to extend their collaboration into a long-term research project (supported by the AKCF fund for 2027-2030).
The aims:
• To support personnel in conducting research on an international scale.
• To develop high-level research quality, striving for internationally recognized standards.
• To provide personnel and students with opportunities for cross-cultural exchange and learning.
The implementation focuses on deep collaboration and practical action research between Burapha University and KISTI, South Korea. The process began with remote coordination via online meetings to jointly define research topics, conduct literature reviews, and plan data collection. Subsequently, faculty representatives and student research assistants from Burapha University traveled to KISTI in Daejeon, South Korea, for a 33-day practical research period, collaborating with KISTI researchers led by Prof. Dr. Insung Ahn. During their operation in South Korea, researchers from both institutions worked closely together on conducting experiments, analyzing data, and drafting research articles focused on pandemics and the application of Large Language Models (LLMs). Furthermore, the team visited KISTI’s world-class supercomputer system, data management facilities, and advanced technologies that support global scientific and technological research.
This collaboration has generated a positive impact by elevating the research process to international standards through intensive practical work and knowledge exchange with leading researchers from KISTI. Faculty members and students have developed advanced international research skills, particularly in highly globally demanded topics such as pandemic forecasting and the application of Large Language Models (LLMs). The tangible outcomes of this quality enhancement include collaborations to produce joint research, as well as research articles that are published and accessible internationally. Furthermore, this project lays a strong foundation for an academic network, paving the way for the development of long-term research proposals to seek support from international funding (AKCF) in the future. This will ultimately empower Burapha University’s research to be highly competitive and create a significant impact on the global stage.
