“Wijai Samut”: Our New Solar-Powered Boat for Coastal Research!

“Wijai Samut”: Our New Solar-Powered Boat for Coastal Research!

The Faculty of Marine Technology at Burapha University has an exciting new project! We have officially launched “Wijai Samut” (Ocean Explorer), our brand-new research boat. This boat is more than just a vessel; it is a floating classroom. It serves as a base for our scientists to study coastal environments and gives our students hands-on experience in marine research. Powered by the Sun, Built for the Earth. Because we care deeply about our oceans, the Wijai Samut is 100% eco-friendly and produces zero pollution. To help reduce waste, we creatively built this trimaran (a boat with three hulls) from two retired sailboats. Today, it runs completely on clean energy. What Makes It Special? • 100% Clean Energy: It collects sunlight using ten 650 W solar panels. • Smart Storage: The solar power is stored safely in two large batteries (150 AH LiFePO4). • Quiet & Green: It moves smoothly using two 15-horsepower electric motors, so it does not disturb marine life. • Research Speed: It travels at a calm 3 to 4 knots, which is the perfect speed for careful ocean surveys. • Room to Learn: The boat can comfortably carry up to 15 researchers and students on every trip.

Project Coordinator: Assist. Prof. Dr. Wirote Laongmanee

Objectives:

To serve as a research base for studying and surveying coastal marine resources and the environment. To provide field training: For supporting practical, hands-on learning in marine research for students of the Faculty of Marine Technology. To promote public awareness: For educating the general public about the practical use and benefits of alternative energy.

Program Activities:

A Big Thank You to Our Supporters. On March 4, 2026, the Faculty of Marine Technology proudly accepted this boat during a special handover ceremony. This project was made possible by generous sponsors, represented by Assoc. Prof. Dr Jariya Boonjawat. Her wonderful vision is to support young scientists and show the public how alternative energy can truly change the world. Follow Our Journey! The Wijai Samut is a significant step forward for the Faculty of Marine Technology, Burapha University, in supporting the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Clean Energy (SDG 7) and Life Below Water (SDG 14). Stay tuned to our Fan Page: https://www.facebook.com/mtoceanexplorer to see the amazing things our students and researchers will discover on their next voyage!

Expected Outcomes (Impacts):

  1. Environmental Impact & Sustainability Zero-Emission Operations: By running entirely on solar panels and electric motors, the vessel eliminates greenhouse gas emissions and water pollution during marine surveys.
  2. Educational & Scientific Impact Enhanced Field Training: The vessel serves as a hands-on “floating classroom,” directly supporting the practical field training of up to 15 marine technology students and researchers at a time.
  3. Social Impact & Public Awareness Promoting Alternative Energy: The project stands as a real-world example to the general public that clean, alternative energy is highly effective and viable for practical applications like a small fishing boat.

Date of Implementation: March 4, 2026
