Local Wisdom Seminar: Sustaining Thai Handicrafts and Traditional Herbal Knowledge

          The Bachelor of Arts in Social Service Management, Department of Sociology, recognizes the significance of promoting students’ understanding of local wisdom as a core element of community identity and cultural continuity. To advance this objective, the department organized a practical seminar titled “Local Wisdom Seminar: Sustaining Thai Handicrafts and Traditional Herbal Knowledge.” The seminar provided students with direct learning experiences led by women experts in local wisdom through workshops on Phuang Mahot Crafting and Herbal Scrub Preparation. The project underscored the role of these women experts as knowledge leaders and highlighted their contributions to sustainable social development. The initiative supports SDG 5: Gender Equality by promoting women’s leadership in knowledge sharing and student learning.

Objectives

1. To enhance students’ understanding of local wisdom. 

2. To support the preservation and sustaining of local wisdom. 

3. To provide a platform for women experts as knowledge leaders to share their expertise with students.

          The seminar featured knowledge sharing on the role of local wisdom in community and cultural development, along with hands-on workshop activities. Participants practiced creating Phuang Mahot (traditional Thai ceremonial hanging garlands) and preparing herbal body scrubs. The session was honored to have Ms. Prinnda Kharomruen and Ms. Waraporn Sroison as distinguished guest speakers, both recognized for their expertise in Phuang Mahot craftsmanship.

1.Increased students’ awareness and understanding of the value and cultural relevance of local wisdom. 

2.Enhanced efforts to sustain traditional crafts and herbal practices through hands-on learning. 

3.Empowered women experts by providing a platform to lead and share local wisdom, strengthening gender-inclusive learning environments. 

4.Promoted SDG 5: Gender Equality by elevating women’s leadership in community-based knowledge and cultural preservation.
