Wireless Network Roaming Service – eduroam, Burapha University

Wireless Network Roaming Service – eduroam, Burapha University

In the digital era, where internet connectivity is vital for education and research, students, lecturers, and staff need continuous access to wireless networks. Eduroam (education roaming) is a global solution developed by Europe’s research and education network, enabling the academic community to access wireless internet at any member institution with a single account. Burapha University recognises the importance of being part of this international academic network. Providing eduroam service enhances the university’s digital infrastructure, supports lifelong learning, promotes academic exchange, and facilitates access to educational resources. Furthermore, it strengthens the university’s international image and aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).

Project Coordinator:

  • MS Kanjana Sukplang, Computer Technical Officer, Senior Professional Level
  • MR Jettanan Juejan, Computer Technical Officer, Professional Level

Objectives:

  • To establish a wireless network system that supports roaming across domestic and international academic institutions through eduroam.
  • To facilitate students, lecturers, researchers, and staff in accessing wireless internet anywhere eduroam is available using their home institution accounts.
  • To strengthen the university’s IT infrastructure, making it modern, secure, and internationally connected.
  • To support academic exchange, collaborative research, and joint education programs with institutions in Thailand and abroad.

Program Activities:

The eduroam Wireless Network Roaming Service Project at Burapha University was implemented in multiple stages, beginning with designing and installing wireless network systems across all three campuses to meet eduroam standards. The project also involved upgrading and modernising the university’s network infrastructure for security and efficiency. Burapha University operates in two primary roles: (1) Service Provider – offering network services to visiting users from other eduroam member institutions, and (2) Identity Provider – authenticating and authorising its personnel when accessing networks at other institutions. Implementation activities included preparing user manuals and promotional materials, supporting roaming and inter-institutional collaboration, developing an eduroam user guide, and establishing a standardised monitoring and logging system to ensure practical service evaluation. All operations are connected through UniNet, which manages eduroam in Thailand.

Expected Outcomes (Impacts):

The eduroam Wireless Network Roaming Service Project at Burapha University has generated positive impacts across multiple dimensions.

  • Educational Impact: University personnel and students can seamlessly access the internet when visiting other institutions domestically and internationally (56 institutions, 316 users), promoting academic exchange and collaborative research.
  • Infrastructure Impact: The university’s network has been upgraded to international standards, supporting visitors from institutions worldwide (351 institutions, 3,753 users).
  • Reputation Impact: The project enhances the university’s international profile, reinforcing its credibility as a modern educational institution.
  • Social and Economic Impact: The project promotes lifelong learning, improves equity in accessing information and education, supports the building of global academic collaboration networks, and plays a crucial role in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 4, SDG 9, and SDG 17, in tangible ways.
