Orientation for freshman: “First Step Together: Start with understanding, go together as a team”

Orientation for freshman: “First Step Together: Start with understanding, go together as a team”

Since the Department of Thai, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, is welcoming first-year students for the academic year 2025, the department intends to organise an orientation program for first-year students. This program aims to warmly welcome new students into the university, marking a significant transitional period where they must adapt to academic learning, daily life, roles, responsibilities, and collaboration with others in society, both as leaders and followers. The orientation is designed to academically prepare students and help them understand their roles as university students. Additionally, it provides opportunities to learn about program objectives, higher education learning approaches, and essential 21st-century skills. Furthermore, it fosters positive relationships among students, faculty, and the department. This project is therefore vital in establishing a strong foundation, encouraging a positive attitude toward learning, enabling students to adapt to an academic environment confidently, and serving as a driving force in producing graduates equipped with knowledge, morality, and readiness to face global challenges.

Project Coordinator: Kanrapee Somchit (Lecturer) and Chittapa Sarapadnuke Chaipunya (Assistant Professor, Dr.)

Objectives:

  1. To ensure that students are physically, mentally, and emotionally prepared, with a positive attitude toward starting university life, and can adapt effectively to a new academic and social environment.
  2. To enable students to understand the learning approaches of the New Breed Graduate Curriculum, which emphasises interdisciplinary integration, soft skills development, and essential 21st-century skills, preparing them to become graduates who can adapt to global changes.
  3. To raise students’ awareness of the importance of well-being—physically, mentally, and socially—so they can apply the knowledge gained from activities to their daily lives and academic journeys throughout the program.

Program Activities:

  1. Freshmen introduce themselves and get to know the faculty members and senior students (2nd–4th year).
  2. The department presents the Bachelor of Arts in Thai curriculum (revised 2021) and explains quality assurance processes with student participation, delivered by the Assistant. Prof. Dr. Chittapa Sarapadnuke Chaipunya.
  3. Freshmen attend a lecture and workshop on “Holistic Well-being Leading to Teamwork Skills and Leadership” by an assistant. Prof. Dr. Bongkoch Naksiang.
  4. Freshmen meet with advisors and senior students to receive guidance on study plans and course registration.

Expected Outcomes (Impacts):

  1. Freshmen develop a positive mindset and readiness to begin university life—physically, mentally, and emotionally—while being able to adapt to higher education confidently and effectively.
  2. Students clearly understand their roles as university learners, recognising responsibilities, self-management, and social interactions in an academic community.
  3. Students become aware of the importance of holistic well-being (physical health, mental health, and social relationships) and can apply these principles appropriately in their academic and personal lives.
  4. Stronger relationships are built between students, faculty, and the department, fostering trust, an open learning atmosphere, and long-term supportive networks throughout the program.
  5. Students gain stronger motivation and clearer learning goals, enabling continuous self-development according to their potential while understanding learning approaches that suit them best.
