The Songkran Festival, traditionally recognised as the Thai New Year, is an important cultural celebration that reflects the values of gratitude, unity, and generosity within Thai society. Preserving this tradition helps safeguard Thailand’s cultural heritage while fostering positive values among organisational members. Recognising the importance of promoting Thai arts and culture, the Faculty of Education, Burapha University, organised a Songkran cultural event to provide opportunities for staff, lecturers, and senior academics to make merit, pay respect to elders through the traditional water-pouring ceremony, and participate in cultural activities. The event strengthened relationships across generations and created a warm and joyful atmosphere within the organisation. Furthermore, it enhanced staff engagement and supported the Faculty’s aspiration to become a Happy Organization that embraces Thai values and continues to preserve the nation’s treasured traditions for future generations.
The aims:
1.To preserve and promote the Songkran Festival as a unique element of Thailand’s cultural heritage and ensure its continuation in society.
2. To express gratitude and respect towards senior lecturers and elders of the Faculty of Education through traditional Thai cultural practices.
3. To strengthen positive relationships, unity, and a sense of belonging among personnel at all levels within the Faculty.
4. To foster a warm, supportive, and happy working environment that enhances well-being and organisational harmony.
The Faculty of Education invited university executives, Faculty administrators, staff members, and senior members to participate in the programme. The activities included offering dry food to Buddhist monks, listening to Buddhist chanting, and performing the traditional water-pouring ceremony to pay respect to elders, during which the senior participants bestowed their blessings upon attendees. A total of 86 participants took part in the project. Overall satisfaction with the programme was rated at the highest level (x̄ = 4.86, S.D. = 0.40).
The impacts:
1. The Faculty of Education has strengthened its image as a model organisation in preserving and promoting Thai arts and cultural traditions.
2. The project provided an opportunity for the values of respect, gratitude, and unity to be passed on to younger generations through meaningful cultural activities.
3. Thai cultural traditions have been preserved and sustainably maintained within the educational institution, contributing to the continuity of the nation’s valuable cultural heritage.
