Sustainable Development within the Framework of the SDGs: Primary Education of Gratitude and Faith in Reverence for Teachers” in the Academic Year 2025

Teachers are esteemed individuals whom their students have always cherished. Teachers, as mentors and sources of wisdom, play a crucial role in enabling success in any academic discipline by providing guidance and instruction that light the way for students. As such, teachers are essential for moulding individuals into valuable human resources for the nation. Repaying the kindness of teachers extends beyond showing respect or compliance with their teachings. It is also expressed through a significant Thai cultural ceremony known as the Wai Kru. This tradition, which has long existed, reflects students’ values of gratitude, humility, and respect for their teachers. The Wai Kru ceremony is not merely a cultural heritage worthy of preservation; it also inculcates fundamental moral values and fosters spiritual development and ethical behaviour.

Project Coordinator: Ketsara Noimanop

Objectives:

  1. To preserve the valuable Thai traditions, arts, and cultural heritage, ensuring their continuity alongside Thai society.
  2. To develop and cultivate moral and ethical growth among students, encouraging them to show gratitude toward their teachers, deepen their love and strengthen their faith in knowledge, and adhere to their teachers’ teachings.
  3. To promote and cultivate unity, harmony, and a sense of belonging among members in the Elementary Education, Psychology, and Guidance Program, including teachers, staff, and students.

Program Activities:

In society, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have emerged as a guiding framework for societal progress. The Wai Kru ceremony aligns with SDG 4: Quality Education, which focuses on comprehensive learner development encompassing both knowledge and moral integrity to cultivate responsible and ethical individuals. It is also related to SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, as it contributes to the preservation of national traditions and cultural heritage. The Elementary Education, Psychology, and Guidance Program acknowledges the significance of this valuable tradition and has organised the project Sustainable Development within the Framework of the SDGs: Primary Education of Gratitude and Faith in Reverence for Teachers” for the Academic Year 2025. This initiative allows students to show gratitude and respect towards their teachers, strengthen their faith in knowledge, honour the teachings imparted to them, and cultivate unity, harmony, and institutional pride within the academic community.

Expected Outcomes (Impacts):

After the implementation of the project, it was found that participating members, who consist of faculty, staff, and students, gained a variety of valuable experiences and benefits in terms of morality, spirit, and interpersonal relationships within the educational community. Firstly, students cultivated an appreciation for their teachers’ valuable contributions and expressed their appropriate gratitude.

They also gained an understanding of the teacher’s role as a source of knowledge and moral guidance, and of faith in the teaching profession and adherence to moral and ethical principles. This outcome aligns with SDG 4: Quality Education, which focuses on developing learners both intellectually and ethically. Secondly, the project contributed to the preservation of Thai traditions, arts, and cultural values in society. The Wai Kru ceremony, as a representation of Thai identity, inspired a sense of pride among youth regarding their cultural heritage and enhanced their understanding of Thai wisdom, aligning with SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities.
