Academic Service Project for External Organizations: Sports Officiating Services for Rugby School International Sports Day Competition

Twenty-first century education emphasizes preparing knowledge workers and lifelong learners capable of navigating rapid, intense, and unpredictable societal changes. Modern graduates require not only technical expertise but also advanced adaptability, flexibility, and problem-solving skills to achieve their goals and contribute meaningfully to society. The Faculty of Sports Science at Burapha University recognizes that comprehensive graduate preparation extends beyond classroom instruction to encompass authentic practical experiences in professional settings. Sports officiating represents a critical professional competency area where students can develop both technical skills and interpersonal abilities essential for careers in sports management, physical education, and athletic administration. This project addresses the need for experiential learning opportunities that bridge theoretical knowledge with real-world application. By providing professional sports officiating services for Rugby School International’s multi-sport competition day, the project creates a mutually beneficial partnership where students gain hands-on experience while the international school receives high-quality officiating services. The initiative promotes physical activity and healthy lifestyles among young people while advancing professional development for university students, demonstrating the university’s commitment to community engagement and academic service excellence.

This project encompasses three interconnected objectives aimed at advancing both student professional development and community sports engagement. First, to provide professional technical staff and sports officiating services for multi-sport competitions, ensuring high-quality event management that meets international school standards and creates safe, fair competitive environments for student athletes. Second, to promote learning, skill development, and authentic professional experiences for Faculty of Sports Science students through practical engagement in real competition settings, allowing them to apply theoretical knowledge from officiating courses in professional contexts and develop competencies essential for careers in sports management and officiating. Third, to provide academic services to external organizations while generating revenue and enhancing the faculty’s positive public reputation, demonstrating the university’s capacity to deliver professional sports services while fulfilling its community engagement mission. These objectives collectively support comprehensive professional capability development in students while advancing youth sports participation and inter-institutional collaboration between higher education and international school sectors.

The project was executed through a systematic PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act) management cycle conducted over a two-month period from October to November 2025. The planning phase involved stakeholder meetings to develop operational frameworks incorporating lessons learned from previous initiatives. Implementation included project proposal development, approval processes, committee appointments, and coordination meetings with course instructors to identify and select qualified students who had completed relevant coursework in football, volleyball, and swimming officiating. This selection process integrated academic learning with practical application, ensuring students possessed necessary theoretical foundations. The project featured three competition days at Rugby School International. On October 10, 2025, 26 students and 2 supervisors provided officiating services for football (12 referees) and volleyball competitions (14 officials), operating from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM. On November 21, 2025, 10 students and 1 supervisor served as assistant officials for swimming competitions from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM. On November 22, 2025, 24 students and 2 supervisors provided officiating services for volleyball competitions, including 16 referees and 8 technical staff members, working from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Each event day included pre-competition planning meetings, operational briefings, and post-event evaluations to ensure quality service delivery and maximize student learning outcomes.

The project generated substantial multidimensional impacts across student development, community engagement, and organizational advancement. Twenty-six students acquired comprehensive practical experience in sports officiating across multiple disciplines including football, volleyball, and swimming, developing technical competencies, decision-making skills, communication abilities, and professional conduct essential for careers in sports management and officiating. Students successfully applied theoretical knowledge from coursework in authentic professional contexts, demonstrating the effective integration of academic learning with practical application. The hands-on experience enabled students to develop confidence, problem-solving capabilities, and interpersonal skills while working under real competition pressures and time constraints. For the community, the project provided Rugby School International with professional-quality officiating services that ensured fair, safe, and well-managed sports competitions for student athletes, promoting physical activity, sportsmanship, and healthy youth development. The multi-day, multi-sport format exposed university students to diverse officiating contexts and challenges, enhancing their versatility and adaptability. The Faculty of Sports Science successfully fulfilled its academic service mission to external organizations, generating revenue of 45,800 baht while establishing a sustained collaborative partnership with an international educational institution. The initiative enhanced the faculty’s reputation as a reliable provider of professional sports services and demonstrated its capacity to integrate education with community engagement. All staff members successfully completed their assigned duties, with the project establishing a model for continued collaboration and future service opportunities that benefit students, partner institutions, and the broader community.
