BUULI Go Green: Waste Management

BUULI Go Green: Waste Management

BUULI Go Green” is a waste management project initiated by the Language Institute, Burapha University (BUULI). The project served as a model of sustainable practice within the campus community. The institute’s faculty and staff recognize that everyday operations produce considerable amounts of waste. Before the project was established, waste management at BUULI was largely overlooked. Without recycling bins, recycling efforts were not encouraged and inconsistent. Acknowledging such urgency, the project was introduced to promote responsible waste handling and foster sustainable habits among all staff members.

Objectives

1. To reduce overall waste generation at the Language Institute. This includes minimising single-use plastics, cutting down unnecessary paper consumption, and reducing food waste during events and daily campus life.

2. To implement an efficient waste segregation system. The project aims to provide clearly labelled bins for recyclables, hazardous waste, and general waste to ensure that waste is separated correctly and safely disposed of.

3. To cultivate environmental awareness among faculty and staff. Through training sessions, workshops, and campaigns, the project encourages all members of the institute to take responsibility for their consumption and disposal habits.

Project Execution (May 20, 2025)

1. Infrastructure and Systems

BUULI Go Green has introduced a waste management center “Waste in Piece”. The center is located within the office area and is equipped with clearly labelled bin for recyclable waste, orphan waste, plastic waste, and hazardous waste.

2. Awareness and Engagement Activities

The project also emphasized on education and engagement activities, which included: – “Reduce Together” campaign to encourage the use of personal tumblers, mugs and lunchboxes. Lucky draw prices were offered as an incentive. The campaign not only reduces single-use plastics but also motivate staff members with a sense of fun competition positive reinforcement. – “Recycle” Workshop was designed to educate staff on the different types of waste and proper disposal methods. The workshop also demonstrated practical ways to reuse office supplies, such as repurposing printing paper. The session emphasized hands-on activities, allowing participants to practice waste segregation and share creative ideas for reducing office waste in their daily routines.

Impact

1. Environmental Impact The project has directly contributed to lowering the institute’s carbon footprint by reducing waste generation and increasing recycling efforts. The reduction in single-use plastics has decreased the amount of non-biodegradable waste sent to landfills. With a proper waste management center located within the office area, BUULI has demonstrated a commitment to environmental sustainability in tangible, measurable ways.

2. Institutional Impact The BUULI Go Green project has brought a positive impact on the overall work environment within the office. The faculty and staff members have become more mindful of their consumption and disposal habits. The introduction of “Waste in Piece” as a waste management center also fostered a cleaner, more organized, and eco-friendly workplace. This shift has created a sense of shared responsibility and pride as a part of daily office culture.
